Sometimes you just happen to be in the right place, at the right time, and September on America’s Pacific Northwest coast is the place to be for fresh hops. In this story for From Our Own Correspondent I stumble across a region abuzz with excitement for the year’s tasty brew.
It was a few minutes past 6am when the first rumours of fresh hops began spreading around the small town of Astoria, on the banks of the vast Columbia River. Text messages, emails and phone calls were alive with enthusiasm – because a lorry load of pungent, emerald gold had been delivered overnight. And for the Fort George brewery, perched on a hillside overlooking the town, a busy day lay in store…
