The first of many visits to the Arctic – in this story for The Independent I followed Norway’s National Tourist Routes along the wild West Coast.
After a quarter of an hour of energetic paddling we positioned ourselves between the surrounding mountainsides in the heart of the fjord. The sea was cobalt and calm with a visibility of several miles.
Continuing south past fields of yellow dandelions, icy ocean inlets and more enchanting rural art installations I could appreciate how bleak this landscape must be for most of the year. I was experiencing this epic scene at a moment of seasonal splendour, but an ominous subtext lingered behind every vista.
