This was an exhausting project for The Telegraph in which I hiked the five most popular routes to Machu Picchu in Peru. Over the course of a month at high altitude I created a short video series.
It had taken me seven hours to navigate the final six miles of Peru’s most famous trek, the Inca Trail and, as I rounded the final cobbled corner of the route, the ancient entrance of Machu Picchu came into view.
Before me, the Sun Gate lay at the crest of the path, shrouded by a copse of Andean qeuña trees. The jungle hummed with myriad flitting insects, yet there wasn’t a human voice to be heard. It was eerily and uncharacteristically calm.
